Aside from the Anime, the food, the high tech gadgets, the robots, Japanese fashion has been the talk of the town lately. But why the sudden boom? Internet and media are the main reason why interest in Japanese fashion recently flourish. Japanese culture is very interesting, and so as their unique way of dressing up.
The Japanese started to adopt the western style of clothing in the middle of the nineteenth century. The trend has been termed as "Street Fashion" two centuries later. Street Fashion clothes, which are usually tailored at home, is a combination of different outfits from the current and the traditional trends.
Street Fashion represents an individualistic genre of dressing up. Unlike the Western fashion, Japanese Street Fashion are printed bold and creative. Japanese teens are wearing mismatched accessories in bright colors that can even be exaggerated sometimes. Seeing this kind of style may be shocking at first, but clearly, it is just a form of self-expression.
Some Hollywood celebrity are also getting hooked in Japanese fashion. Harajuku Lovers created by Gwen Stefani for instance. Harajuku is actually the fashion center of Tokyo. Avril Lavigne that has a very different choices in clothing to that of the Japanese, has been seen shopping in Harajuku.
Japanese fashion has also been expanding lately. Their clothing trend can be either practical or cartoon-like. The Lolita trend which was named after Vladimir Nabokov' novel, is inspired by clothes in Victorian era, but somehow given a twist. Visual Kei is flashier, and clothes are almost cosplay-like, and uses heavy make-up.
