Aimee Mullins: How my legs give me super-powers

Aimee Mullins: How my legs give me super-powers is a TED talk by athlete, model, actor and activist Aimee Mullins.  She talks about perceptions of ability vs. disability with respect to her prosthetic legs. Her TED bio explains:

"Aimee Mullins was born without fibular bones, and had both of her legs amputated below the knee when she was an infant. She learned to walk on prosthetics, then to run -- competing at the national and international level as a champion sprinter, and setting world records at the 1996 Paralympics in Atlanta. At Georgetown, where she double-majored in history and diplomacy, she became the first double amputee to compete in NCAA Division 1 track and field."

As you can imagine, over the years Aimee has had a lot of time to ponder statements people would make to her such as, "You know Aimee, you're very attractive. You don't look disabled."

It opened her eyes to a conversation about beauty, body, and from an identity standpoint, what it means to be disabled. She points out, "Pamela Anderson has more prosthetic in her body than I do. Nobody calls her disabled."

Aimee worked with some fashion designers to make art-prosthetic legs, freeing her from the need to replicate human-ness. She had legs of different heights made, which gave her a new-found relationship with door jambs. When she tested the first one out, a friend who was used to seeing her at a certain height, commented off-the-cuff that it wasn't fair that she could change her height. Aimee states that that's when she knew the conversation with society had changed profoundly in the last decade, moving beyond overcoming deficiency and limitations, and moving instead into potential.

She's an advocate of making people that society once considered disabled architects of their own identities, which they can change at will, by designing their own bodies from a place of empowerment. Great talk.

I won't ruin the whole thing.  It's not just the words, it's the images plus the delivery. You have to see the 10 minutes of poetry. Enjoy!

oh hey, hi

oh hey, hi is a personal/writing tumblr blog by actress and UCSD alumn Katy Stoll.

So far it's just one anectdote about a dirty old man, but it's promising. And it uses the word perfidious.  Which makes it automatically awesome.

Clean is Happy

Clean is Happy is a commercial website for the Washlet. It's a bidet-lid for your toilets. Of sorts. JenK writes in explaining perfectly:

"This is a website for bidets, but the spokespeople awkwardly never mention that word...or anything else related to actually using toilets. It's entertaining watching them avoid the dirty while promoting fancy toilets. If you only check out one watch, 'why it's better'.

Also, I don't understand what's up with the engrish title.

Oh! Also, there are more awkward gems under the questions bar, 'How hard does the water come out?'
---'ranging from nice to nicer

Great find!

Ali G Interviews Noam Chomsky

Ali G Interviews Noam Chomsky is a self-explanatory YouTube video of Ali G interviewing Noam Chomsky. I make no apologies about despising Noam's views on linguistics (mostly the stuff about the non-existent language organ) so I found this interview especially hilarious. He doesn't seem to catch on that the Ali G Show is a comedy thing.

Bill Gates: How I'm trying to change the world now

Bill Gates: How I'm trying to change the world now is a TED talk by Bill Gates and what he plans to do with his massive amount of money.

Right off the bat, Bill Gates states that he does not believe the market naturally drives scientists, communicators, governments to do the right things. There are important problems that don't get worked on, that can only get solved when enough brilliant people who care hop on the band-wagon.

I don't know why, but it makes me feel much better that a man with Bill Gates' wealth shares the same opinions as I do about how the world and its markets operate, even if it's only on this small point.  I mean, I suppose he could have been a hands-off libertarian and kept all of his 'puter money to himself. But instead, he wants to take his money and cure malaria and improve education in America. HEAR HEAR!

Bednets and books for everyone, Bill. You go.

Fat Wallet

Fat Wallet is a site for finding coupons and deals. It looks like there are annoying sign-ups, but according to on JE, there are good deals.

THe site explains its history: "Tim Storm launched FatWallet.com in 1999, simply as one page listing coupons for a handful of retailers. With the addition of a Hot Deals forum, FatWallet.com became a community of savvy shoppers. As this community grew, Storm recognized the members as the pulse of not only FatWallet.com but also the evolving marketplace."

Mancow Waterboarded (VIDEO): Conservative Radio Host Say It's Torture is an article on the Huffington Post about Erich 'Mancow' Muller, a Chicago-based conservative radio host and his views on waterboarding.

"He recently decided to silence critics of waterboarding once and for all. He would undergo the procedure himself, and then he would be able to confidently convince others that it is not, in fact, torture.

Or so he thought."

The Art of Manliness

The Art of Manliness is a blog by married couple Brett and Kate McKay. It features articles on helping men be better husbands, better fathers, and better men. Brett explains his blog:

"My idea for the Art of Manliness came about as I was reading Men’s Health magazine. It seemed to me that the magazine’s contents were continually going downhill, with more and more articles about sex and how to get six pack abs. Was this all there was to being a man?

...

In our search to uncover the lost art of manliness, we’ll look to the past to find examples of manliness in action. We’ll analyze the lives of great men who knew what it meant to 'man up' and hopefully learn from them. Every week we seek to uncover the essential skills and knowledge today’s man needs to know.

...

I don’t claim to have all the answers, nor do I claim that I’m an expert on all things manly. I started this blog not because I had all the answers to being a man, but because I wanted to explore the questions with other men."

Enjoy!

Maybe You Shouldn't Buy That

Maybe You Shouldn't Buy That is a blog chronicling a collection of the most expensive and most worthless items in the world.

Sample:
"A Segway is kind of an unnecessary device. For moderately paced movement, you could probably save yourself a couple grand and walk. Or you could bathe in your excess by rolling around on the $12,000 Chanel Segway. Complete with a Chanel handbag and matching black quilted-leather mud flaps and handlebars, you can finally roll around with the combination of fashion and lethargy you’ve always craved."

You can sort entries by price/ridiculosity.  I recommend the $$$$$ category for maximal gawkery.

Barry Schwartz: The real crisis? We stopped being wise

Barry Schwartz: The real crisis? We stopped being wise is a TED talk by American psychologist and author Barry Schwartz.  According to TED he makes "a passionate call for 'practical wisdom' as an antidote to a society gone mad with bureaucracy. He argues powerfully that rules often fail us, incentives often backfire, and practical, everyday wisdom will help rebuild our world."

This talk took my breath away.  I've always felt bureaucracy and rules can be suffocating, which doesn't mean that we should abandon civility and world order altogether, but rather, that they are never enough and you must have a clearer light from within to guide you.

Barry quotes from Aristotle, who said  practical wisdom was having the moral will to do right by other people, and the moral skill to figure out what that means. Barry argues a wise person knows when and how to make the exception to every rule.  A wise person knows how to improvise, as real world problems are ambiguous and ill-defined. The context is always changing.  A wise person knows how to use these moral skills in pursuit of the right aims. To serve other people, not to manipulate other people.  Finally he argues a wise person is made, not born. Wisdom comes from experience.  You need time to get to know the people you are serving, the permission to improvise and occasionally fail, and mentorship from wise teachers.

Barry says that the good news is that you do not need to be brilliant to be wise, but the bad news is that without wisdom brilliance, wisdom is not enough. It can get you in trouble. It's a mad, mad world, and we need practical wisdom to fix it.

I've always love improv, and I love this guy. A+.

Absurd.org is an avant-garde project site consisting mostly of angry machine language from your computer. By this I mean, most of the words look garbled, as if yoru printer was breaking down and spitting random symbols at you. At least that's what my printer does when it wants to go on strike.

Sometimes the text is readable, and yet still it still doesn't make sense.  The links lead to random other liks which often include pixelated skulls, pixelated gifts and clashing fine-grain lines.

I get it, it's absurd. It's absurd that you keep clicking. But seriously, I want those 5 minutes back. :( :)

Peter Donnelly: How juries are fooled by statistics

Peter Donnelly: How juries are fooled by statistics is a TED talk by by Oxford mathematician Peter Donnelly, and thought it was an interesting take on sensitivity/specificity and legal medicine. Further, I thought none of my friends would think this was interesting, but I thought TOTI readers might hear me out. It's a good example of why medical students should care about such things. (I would skip ahead to the relevant bit that starts at 11:03 minutes.)

Peter recounts the SIDS case ( = "cot death" in British), where lawyer Sally Clark was accused of murdering two of her children. In court, a pediatrician stated that the chance of both of them dying of SIDS in a family like hers was 1/73 million. The two deaths are, of course, likely not independent as they shared both environmental and genetic factors, and bad statistics were used to arrive at the figure. Sally was convicted.

Sally's sentence was eventually reversed on her second appeal, but she died in 2007. The Guardian stated "Her family said she had not recovered from the miscarriage of justice." The pediatrician, Sir Roy Meadow, faced a disrepute charge by Britain's General Medical Council, and was struck from the medical register. He was recently re-instated on appeal (stating he had not set himself up as a statistical expert).

I think this is a nice illustration of why sensitivity and specificity matter more than just something to memorize for medical boards.

Kogi

This is old hat for the foodies but I figured it was time to feature it. I mean, it's been featured on NIGHTLINE so I feel remiss in having held out and not written about it earlier. //

Kogi is a Korean BBQ-To-Go Taco truck restaurant that announces its location (in LA) via Twitter.  They serve a mix of Korean BBQ and Mexican out of a taco truck. While they do have some pre-scheduled stops, they're always on the go.  Supposedly when the tweets go out, the lines are like, totally 100 feet long.

The Ad Council’s Greatest Hits

The Ad Council’s Greatest Hits  is an article on Mental Floss by Kara Kovaichik. It rounds up 8 famous Public Service Announcements that are forever engrained into the American psyche.  She also gives a history of the Ad Council:

"The Ad Council was formed in 1942 when a group of Madison Avenue advertising execs wanted to contribute to the war effort without actually leaving their day jobs. The result was a series of ads encouraging Americans to buy war bonds. They were so successful that President Roosevelt encouraged the organization to continue the program after the war had ended. How does it work? A non-profit or government organization (such as the Boys Clubs of America or the Department of Homeland Security) approaches the Ad Council with a cause that needs support. The Council farms out the job to an advertising agency, which provides its creative and production work free of charge. The people that appear in PSA spots, whether celebrities or civilians, get no pay and no residuals for their work. The Council then approaches different media outlets – radio, TV and even the Internet – to get the ads placed (again, free of charge). The Ad Council requires that PSAs promote positive social change in such areas as the quality of life for children, preventative health, education, community well being, and environmental preservation."

The honored ads are:  Smokey Bear; The United Negro College Fund; Keep America Beautiful; Don’t Smoke; Don’t Do Drugs, Either; Don’t Screw Around in the Workplace; Buckle Up; Don’t Touch Blasting Caps.

Enjoy!

Why the F*** Do You Have A Kid?

Why the F*** Do You Have A Kid? is a submission-fueled, tumblr website that features poor parenting choices and their kids. While the site's title is a rhetorical question, sometimes the pictures seem to answer it clearly. Anyway.

I'm not sure how cool it is to have the pictures of these kids up, per se, unless it encourages the parents to cut it out. But it's on the webs, and now you've seen it.

Jeff Skoll: Making movies that make change

Jeff Skoll: Making movies that make change is a TED talk by entrepreneur and former eBay president Jeff Skoll.  Basically, he is the guy who funded An Inconvenient Truth, Good Night and Good Luck, The Kite Runner, Fast Food Nation, and Charlie Wilson's War. First of all, I had no idea someone was actively funding all of these movies I liked and was interested in. On purpose. I mean, on a purpose besides making money... Like consciously orchestrating it. Second of all, it's the eBay guy!? Alright, awesome.

He's on to something.  This is a powerful way to change social opinions and debate. I thought this talk was totally going to bore me, and it didn't.  Perhaps that sounds like less of an enthusiastic endorsement than I had in mind, but you get the idea. He got a few chuckles out of me.

According to TED,

"His production company, Participant Productions, is what Skoll calls a 'pro-social media company,' making features and documentaries that address social and political issues and drive real change. His film North Country, for example, is credited with influencing the signing of the 2005 Violence Against Women Act. Participant's blockbuster doc, An Inconvenient Truth, is required viewing in classrooms around the world, and has unquestionably changed the debate around climate change. Upcoming for Participant are two films about Afghanistan, and a documentary about Jimmy Carter's controversial 2006-7 book tour."

Bacon Torch

"Grease Fire: Pure oxygen flows from a metal pipe through a core of baked prosciutto, generating a grease fire hot enough to ignite steel and burn a hole clear through this pan. A wrapping of less-flammable uncooked prosciutto focuses the flame into an intense bacon-plasma torch"

Who knew bacon had so many uses? Apparently, this website has devised a way to use the fat in bacon to create an uber intense grease-fire:

"Bacon is fattening because it contains a lot of chemical energy tied up in its proteins, and especially in its fat. You can release that energy either by digesting it or by burning it with a healthy supply of oxygen. The challenge isn't creating the heat; it's engineering a bacon structure strong enough to withstand the stress of a 5,000°F bacon plasma flame.

Skip to 1:30 for some bacon torch action!!
